For at least four millennia, the art and practice of falconry flourished organically - conveyed to each generation by family, community, and cultural exchange between nation-states. Many cultures retained a professional falconer-class supporting nobility, but falconry still thrived in more obscure, humble realms. Rarely chronicled in stone or paper, falconry prospered under an ancient master-apprentice relationship. Within each region, distinctive forms emerged tied to culture, landscape, and quarry. Yet despite superficial differences, global falconry is an expression of a shared connection to the natural world.
The last few centuries brought-on the expansion of the firearm, agricultural intensification, urbanization, and other political shifts that endangered this ancient sport. By the mid-19th century, British and Irish falconers established associations to protect and celebrate falconry as it faced modern threats.
By the late 20th century, falconry associations formed across the globe. Individually, they serve the interests of their members and safeguard legal falconry, but collectively, they offer a compelling display of a thriving living heritage. Explore the global falconry community!
